Chiapa de Corzo Day Trip and Sumidero Canyon Scenic Boat Ride
Visit one of Chiapas? most popular natural sites on this tour to Sumidero Canyon National Park. Your experience begins in the historical town of Chiapa de Corzo, where you?ll see colonial attractions like Santo Domingo Church with a local guide. Then experience Sumidero Canyon on a scenic boat ride along the Grijalva River, which runs all the way through the canyon and provides you with incredible views of its dramatic cliffs and native wildlife. Transport is available from Tuxtla Gutiérrez or San Cristóbal de las Casas.

After hotel pickup in either Tuxtla Gutiérrez or San Cristóbal de las Casas, depending on the option selected, your tour starts with the drive to Chiapa de Corzo, the first Spanish city settled in the state of Chiapas (about 20 minutes from Tuxtla; 50 minutes from San Cristóbal).

Chiapa de Corzo is a Pueblo Mágico, or Magic Town, a designation by Mexico?s tourism department to recognize towns that offer an authentic Mexican cultural experience or hold an important place in Mexico?s history. When you arrive in this small colonial city on the banks of the Grijalva River (Rio Grijalva), do a bit of sightseeing for about an hour with your guide. See Santo Domingo Church, a former monastery built by Dominican friars in the 16th century; the large, Spanish-style plaza that?s home to an old ceiba tree known as La Pochota; and La Pila fountain, the town?s famous Moorish-style landmark built in 1562. You?ll also have the chance to browse some craft stalls to look for colorful souvenirs and gifts.

With its location on the Grijalva River, Chiapa de Corzo is the gateway to Sumidero Canyon National Park (Parque Nacional Cañon del Sumidero), where you?re heading next via boat! Before boarding, you have a chance to buy lunch and snacks to take with you on the boat at the restaurants and shops at the marina. Then begin cruising along the river, from town into the canyon, marveling at the majestic beauty of its 3,200-foot (1,000-meter) walls, waterfalls, caves, rock formations and native vegetation along the river.

During your 2.5-hour boat ride through the canyon, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife like birds, monkeys and maybe even a river crocodile. Throughout the ride, listen to your guide\'s narration about the canyon?s natural history, which began forming around the same time as the Grand Canyon in the United States. After the boat ride, you?ll be returned to your departure city, where your tour ends; it?s about a 30-minute drive to Tuxtla and 1.25-hour drive to San Cristóbal.
